PISLM Mission to Petite Martinique to Assess Land Degradation

September 4, 2025

GEORGE’S GRENADA- SEPTEMBER 4, 2025- A technical team from the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) led by Dr. Ronen Francis- Executive Director, visited Petite Martinique on September 3, 2025, as part of an urgent mission to assess the extent of land degradation, particularly in areas worsened by the recent passage of Hurricane Beryl.

This mission was supported by Project Managers from two of PISLM’s flagship initiatives: the Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) Project, implemented in Carriacou, and the SOILCARE Phase One Project, implemented across eight Caribbean Small Island Developing States (CSIDS), including Grenada. Representing these projects were Mr. Bernard McIntosh and Mr. Trevor Thompson, respectively.

The team also received support from Mr. Leon Williams, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Operator from the Ministry of Agriculture, Grenada, and Mr. Dwight Logan, a local stakeholder from Petite Martinique.

Based on the assessment of the areas visited in Madam Pierre, North Point, and nearby locations, Executive Director Dr. Ronen Francis, a Soil Scientist, confirmed that the degradation already present in the landscape had been further intensified by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

“From the initial assessment, erosion here has taken its toll for 15-20 years, being further exacerbated by the passage of Hurricane Beryl. This community needs significant attention and it’s never too late to start actions on the ground.”

The Mission to Petite Martinique, represents a key step in supporting national efforts toward sustainable land rehabilitation and promoting Climate Smart Agricultural practices across Grenada’s sister isles.

“PISLM is here in Grenada, we are committed to supporting those impacted by the ills of land degradation and help them improve their livelihoods,” he added, reiterating the commitment of the Inter-Governmental Organization Organization (IGO).

PISLM has completed a baseline analysis, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government. This analysis will provide the basis for planning and initiating targeted on-the-ground interventions aimed at restoring the degraded lands in Petite Martinique.
