A Shared Commitment with Our Communities to Restore Land and Build Resilience for a Sustainable Caribbean SIDS Future

Dear Colleagues, Partners, and Friends,

As I officially assume the role of Executive Director of the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM), I do so with humility, gratitude, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people, ecosystems, and institutions we serve across the Caribbean.

Rooted in the principles of servant leadership, my vision prioritizes people, empowering our staff, partners, and Member States to collectively drive solutions that halt, reverse, and restore degraded lands, improve livelihoods, and build climate resilience. I believe leadership is not about authority, but about service: enabling others to succeed, to lead, and to innovate.

At this critical juncture, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are at the forefront of some of the world’s most urgent environmental challenges. They also hold significant potential for transformative change. The mission of PISLM is more relevant than ever. In alignment with SDG 15.3, which calls for efforts to combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, and achieve a land degradation neutral world by 2030, we are committed to scaling up sustainable land management, sustainable soil management, and climate-smart practices across all SIDS partners.

In the months ahead, I will be working closely with our Member States, regional institutions, and development partners to advance the following strategic priorities:

  • Lead regional efforts to advance sustainable land management and support full implementation of the UNCCD framework.
  • Mobilize diverse and sustainable funding sources to support long-term land restoration, research, and regional initiatives.
  • Develop an efficient, technology-enabled, and collaborative operational framework to enhance project delivery and knowledge sharing.
  • Strengthen regional capacity through targeted research, innovation transfer, and empowering farmers to adopt climate-smart land management practices.
  • Promote strong regional partnerships and institutional collaboration to facilitate knowledge generation, exchange, and joint action towards land degradation neutrality.

I will also prioritize listening deeply to our staff, Member States, and the communities we serve, recognizing that people are the true drivers of change. By embracing this stakeholder-driven approach, we can strengthen collaboration, amplify our impact, and ensure that our actions directly address the needs of those most affected by environmental degradation and climate vulnerability.

Thank you for your continued dedication and partnership. I look forward to working with each of you as we steward our lands, our soils, and our shared future.

With respect and resolve,

Dr. Ronen C.A. Francis
