ST. GEORGE’S GRENADA, AUGUST 14, 2024- The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) extends heartfelt congratulations to the winners of the two PISLM- sponsored awards at the 35th NGC Caribbean Broadcasting Union Media Awards in Palencia Belize
The prestigious event, held in Belize on Tuesday 13, August 2024, celebrated the exceptional contributions of media professionals in raising awareness and providing insightful coverage on critical environmental issues affecting the region with an emphasis on Land Degradation. The PISLM was the proud sponsor of the awards for Best Television Production on Land Degradation Neutrality and Best Article on Land Degradation.
The award for Best Television Production on Land Degradation Neutrality was awarded to Newsroom Guyana’s Neil Marks and Shatanand Anude for their story, “Why is Guyana spending Big to Replant Patches in its Forest.”
This production highlighted how mining contributed to the deforestation in Guyana, explaining that last year an estimated 6, 470 hectares of the country’s forest was cleared, most of it because of mining. The production further features the Guyana Forestry Commission’s and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission’s collaborative project to reforest some 200,000 hectares of forest cleared over recent years for mining and other activities, such as agriculture and the building of roads.
Similarly, the Best Article on Land Degradation award honored exemplary journalism that provided in-depth analysis and compelling arguments on the causes, effects, and potential remedies for land degradation. The winner was Ramardo Lyons of Jamaica Observer for his story,
“ Save The Mangroves Plan Takes Off.”
This article highlights the University of the West Indies (UWI) Solutions for Developing Countries’ (SODECO’s) collaboration with Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation at Halse Hall Great House in Clarendon to implement a Mangrove Restoration project being done in partnership with Sugar Company of Jamaica Holdings Limited and a raft of other agencies.
PISLM received a total of six entries for the Category of Best Television production on Land Degradation – three (3) submissions from RJR Communications group (Ray Ray Market Fires, Preventing Future Landslides and Risks to Water Quality); two (2) submissions from Great Belize
Productions Limited (Belize Hosts Regional Land Degradation AGM and Maya Land Rights) along with one (1) submission from Newsroom Inc Guyana (Why is Guyana spending Big to Replant Patches in its Forest).
The organisation also received two entries for the Category of Best Article on Land Degradation- one from Jamaica Observer–Print (Save the Mangrove Plan takes off and one from RJRGLEANER Communications Group (Twin Tragedy).
The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) takes the opportunity to applaud the dedication and hard work of all the media professionals from regional media organisations that continue to use their platforms, creativity and expertise to highlight issues and projects related to land and soil and efforts to promote their sustainability.
