The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM), is pleased to sponsor two award categories for the 2026 Caribbean Broadcasting Unionโ€™s (CBUโ€™s) Media Awards, scheduled for Guyana in August. As part of efforts to encourage environmental reporting particularly showing land degradation as a lived reality and the vulnerability of communities- as resilient and capable of restoration, PISLM is sponsoring the Best Television Production on Land Degradation Neutrality and Best Digital Production on Land Degradation Neutrality.
Championing Environmental Reporting through Sponsorship of CBU Awards
Today, on World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we unite under the global theme: Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore. While rangelands may not dominate the landscape of every Caribbean island, this theme speaks directly to us โ€” because from the Rupununi and Sipaliwini savannas of Guyana and Suriname, to the Yalbac and coastal savannas of Belize, our wider Caribbean region holds vast living ecosystems that sustain livelihoods, anchor biodiversity, and regulate the water and carbon cycles we all depend upon.
World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought Message
The Strengthening Ecosystem Resilience for Integrated Landscape Restoration and Climate-Resilient Food Systems in Carriacou, project seeks as its objective to effectively address land degradation in Carriacou, through demonstration and application of ecosystems-based landscape restoration, sustainable land management and good agricultural practices, using community participatory approaches that expands diversification and sustainability of livelihoods options. Significant progress is being made to improve farmersโ€™ access to water, which will enhance irrigation, boost food production, increase livestock, and ultimately improve their livelihoods by increasing their earnings. This project is being executed by the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management, with funding from the Global Environment Facility and implemented with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). One of its significant accomplishments is the restoration of the Dumfries cistern, a crucial water storage system for the community for decades. The cistern which has deteriorated and could no longer function at its full capacity, has been successfully restored

Minister for Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, Hon. Lennox Andrews, in welcoming the organisation, noted that the presence of partners such as the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) on the ground brings tangible benefits to the region. โ€œWhen partnering organisations like PISLM are on the ground, support becomes accessible, integrated collaboration becomes easier, coordination improves, and implementation is more effective,โ€ Minister Andrews stated.

Minister for Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy, Hon. Kerryne James, described the co-location of the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) Headquarters alongside the Delegation Office of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) as particularly noteworthy. โ€œIt reflects an evolution in how we approach development in the Caribbean โ€” not in silos, but through convergence,โ€ Minister James affirmed. โ€œAgriculture cannot be divorced from land management. Land management cannot be separated from climate resilience.โ€ Minister James also called on the other PISLM-affiliated countries to complete their Host Country Agreements and their Letters of Accession to facilitate greater efficiency in the execution of national project activities.

IICA Representative in the Eastern Caribbean States (ECS) Gregg Rawlins underscored the organisationโ€™s enduring commitment to supporting Grenadaโ€™s agricultural development. He highlighted IICAโ€™s 4 decades of partnership with the Government of Grenada, noting that the new office represents not just a physical relocation, but a renewed commitment to advancing technical cooperation, innovation, and sustainable agricultural growth.

Executive Director Dr. Ronen C.A Francis, citing this advancement as a milestone for the organisation, expressed his deep appreciation to the Government of Grenada, as well as the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana for previously hosting the Secretariat during earlier phases of the organisationโ€™s development. As the organisation evolves into this new chapter, the Executive Director explained that the work is not solely abstract policy ambitions but translates into tangible action. Addressing the strategic direction of the organisation he listed, โ€œInstitutional strengthening and accreditation; implementation at scale particularly for the SOILCARE initiative and forward-looking regional programming, which includes the recent GEF-9 decisions of our Ministers, with a forthcoming Caribbean Drought Initiative to address the most pressing and emerging threats to our region.โ€
