πŸ’§πŸŒ³The SOILCARE Project Completes the 1st Phase of major efforts to rehabilitate degraded forest reserve and protect the vital reserve in Les Avocat-Grenada πŸ‡¬πŸ‡©. The restoration commenced in February 2025 and was completed in April- spearheaded by the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM)β€”a Caribbean Inter-Governmental Organizationβ€”through our Multicountry Soil Management Initiative for Integrated Landscape Restoration and Climate-Resilient Food Systems (SOILCARE) initiative. The project is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with implementation support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Grenada’s Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry, Marine Resources and Cooperatives. Project Manager-Trevor Thompson explains the importance of the work completed in this vital reserve.

​Rhoda St. John, Public Relations Officer at the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, says the Compost Bins, donated by the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management in January, will support and enhance soil health, agricultural practices and promote sustainable soil and land management techniques in seven of the Nations Schools.

The reserve, located in St. David, was identified as a land degradation hot spot, under Phase 1 of the regional project, because of the severe erosion occurring and the impacts the proliferation of the invasives were having on water supply at the Les Avocat Dam and Water Treatment Plant. This effort plays a crucial role in tackling land degradation in Grenada. The demonstration site is approximately 10 acres and Land Management Specialist Dr. Ronen Francis, stated that provisions have been made for, β€œRepurposing the bamboo- some are being packed over root stumps to prevent new growth, while the rest will be used as construction material for the rebuilding efforts in Carriacou.”

πŸŒ±πŸ” Behind the scenes of Guyana's Soil Survey! Did you know that this exercise, which will be complemented by the handover of laboratory equipment to support soil testing in the country, will aim to collect 319 samples in the 10 administrative regions of Guyana and be able to help the country to be able to test over 10 parameters of soil fertility including soil nutrients, soil carbon and others. πŸŒ±πŸ”¬ The survey which commenced on January 13, is being done in collaboration among the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM), the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, with support from the University of the West Indies. This is being done as part of Phase 1 of the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) multicounty soil management initiative for integrated landscape restoration and sustainable food systems: Phase 1 known as CSIDS-SOILCARE. πŸ‡―πŸ‡² Jamaican Cartographer- Brittany Bygrave was one of 27 participants from the eight (CSIDS SOILCARE) project countries that participated in a Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration Modelling Training in Grenada from 🌍 February 10-15, 2025. This training focused on exploring and comparing carbon gaps, helping participants like Brittany to strengthen their knowledge on the potential of their countries and the recommended strategies for sustainable soil management. It will help her to map areas across her countries, that can retain more carbon, compared to other areas and reduce Greenhouse gases.
